Fuse Board Upgrades in Boldmere, Sutton Coldfield

Boldmere is mostly the semis and short terraces built between the wars, running off Boldmere Road toward Sutton Park. The original wiring in most of them was replaced long ago, but the board that came with that work is now old itself: typically an early consumer unit with one protective device covering a whole bank of circuits.

The problem with those boards is how they behave when something goes wrong. A faulty kettle or a wet outdoor socket trips the one device, and half the house goes dark with it, including the freezer and the lights you need to find the problem. A modern board protects each circuit separately, so one fault trips one circuit.

Before a new board goes in, every circuit is tested. In the Boldmere semis the usual finds are small and fixable: a lighting circuit without an earth at one fitting, a kitchen extension spurred from an upstairs circuit, or an outdoor socket with no protection. Anything that must be fixed before the board can be certificated is explained and priced before we start.

Many Boldmere houses have had kitchens extended and lofts converted, so the new board is laid out with every circuit labelled, and with spare capacity if a charger on the drive is likely.

The job is usually a day, with the power off for part of it, and the certificate is emailed the same week. A photo of the fuse board with the cover on, and a line about what you want doing, is enough to give you a sensible idea of the job before anyone visits.
